2023/12/13
Technology startups have consistently been a globally prominent and highly scrutinized topic. Their contributions extend beyond technological advancements, stimulating innovation and upgrading industries. There’s a substantial opportunity for these startups to excel in intense market competition, especially when they gain visibility in international markets. At the recently held Web Summit 2023, eight Taiwanese startups supported by the G Camp international innovation and entrepreneurship training program showcased a variety of unique technologies and products, receiving significant international acclaim. Throughout the visit, they participated in more than 55 business networking events, estimated to have facilitated 13 potential collaboration opportunities and created business prospects worth nearly NTD 50 million. This further underscores Taiwan’s innovative prowess and technological strength in the startup scene.
In recent years, Taiwan’s technology startups have continued to shine on the global stage. This success is not only attributed to the technological prowess of the startups themselves but is also a result of the maturing overall startup environment. The key to this progress lies in the driving force of the government—not merely as an “architect of the times” but actively promoting policy implementation, domestic and foreign investments, and the integration of market resources. These mechanisms operate to gradually accumulate nourishment and energy within Taiwan’s startup ecosystem, fostering a positive cycle of development where innovation is driven by startups.
Capital Wealth, Extensive Services, Market Connection, and International Expansion: Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs Facilitates Global Integration for Startups.
There is an urgent need for innovative technological support to drive upgrade and transformation, especially in response to the dual challenges of digitization and green transformation faced by Taiwan’s industries. To address this, the Small and Medium Enterprise Administration (SMESA) of the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) serves as a matchmaking intermediary between startups, small and medium-sized enterprises, and large enterprises. It serves as a focal point, combining private investment funds with industrial capabilities, to facilitate the scaled development of startups.
Chin-tsang Ho, Director-General of the SMESA, stated in a recent interview that the administration has established a comprehensive incubation system for nurturing innovation and entrepreneurship. It aims to assist startup teams from various aspects such as ‘capital wealth, extensive services, and international expansion.’ In addition to providing funding and entrepreneurial services, the administration places a strong emphasis on enhancing technical and business exchanges between local startup teams and both domestic and international industries. This proactive effort aims to facilitate the integration of local startups into the global entrepreneurial ecosystem.
